Please answer the following questions in no more than 300 words.

1. Why are you the best candidate for office?

Three attributes make me a top candidate for Bratenahl Council: my qualifications, my record, and my operating style. My qualifications are rooted in hands-on experience. I understand operations and finance through my Weatherhead MBA and more than a decade of experience working at two large Cleveland-based corporations. I know environmental and green space issues from my tenure at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. I grasp tough police and safety issues from my years as a radio and television news reporter covering the police beat, among others. My working knowledge of infrastructure and utilities was gained while I worked for Ameritech/SBC. I understand broad civic issues, public policy, government, tax mechanisms and strategy from my years at The Cleveland Foundation. And, our firm (Wendling Communications) specializes in issues of K-12 and higher education. My four-year record includes working to preserve green space both within and adjoining the Village, including Dike 14; advocating tirelessly for improved tracking and publishing of Village financial information; strengthening zoning codes to guide quality of design and construction while preserving green space; cleaning up dangerous pollution in a local creek; adopting a “vicious dog” ordinance; supporting needed improvements to Village parks and facilities; and purchasing better police equipment. My operating style is simple: listen, learn, reflect, collaborate and seek to find the best win for the most people.

2. If elected or re-elected, what are your top three (3) priorities and why?

My first priority is to garner solid estimates of 2006 revenue and develop fiscally prudent budgets accordingly. 2005 revenues are down for a number of reasons; fiscal management for 2006 will be exceptionally challenging. My second priority is to determine how to better compensate our Village employees, most especially our police and service departments. Because finances are tight, raises this year did not reflect the excellent work all our employees consistently do and the extra effort they give whenever it’s needed. We are obligated to support some critical capital and other projects, but it’s also imperative that we take care of our people. My third priority is to continue the fight to preserve Village green space and retain Bratenahl’s character as a lush green oasis in the city.
