Please answer the following questions in no more than 300 words.
1. Why are you the best candidate for office?
I believe I am an excellent candidate because I have 13 years of experience in college administration work which included responsibility for facility management, extensive experience in volunteering and serving our District, as well as being the parent of two daughters who have attended our schools. (One has graduated and the other is in elementary school.) I believe all of this gives me valuable insight into the day-to-day operations of our schools and is especially helpful when asked to make decisions as a Board Member. I have volunteered in our school district as a PTA President, Vice-President, Newsletter Editor, Assemblies Coordinator, and have served on many PTA committees. I was Vice-President of our high school's Choral Boosters. I have served on district committees for textbook selection and to promote passage of school levies. I was appointed to the school board two years ago when a member resigned. Since then, I have served on the Board's Transportation Committee, Special Education Advisory Committee, Technology Committee, and was appointed as Strongsville's representative to Polaris Career Center's Board of Education. Also, I was recently appointed to our Board's Safety and Security Committee, and Personnel and Public Relations Committee. I have toured all of our District's buildings and programs to meet our many employees, to gain firsthand knowledge of the facilities in which they worked, and to personally learn of their successes and challenges.
2. If elected or re-elected, what are your top three (3) priorities and why?
Our District has the distinction of earning the state's "Excellent" designation four times in the last four years. Therefore, my number one priority would be to "continue the excellence" as follows. Any decision that has come before me is always tested against the following question: "What is best for our students?" It can be difficult to sort through all the dynamics that are involved in making a decision, but I believe I have been effective at determining how each decision may or may not benefit our students' achievement, safety, and opportunities. I would continue to weigh every decision against this measuring stick as it is my firm belief that our schools exist solely for providing a quality education to our students. Additionally, our District is in the beginning stages of implementing a Strategic Plan that was conceived through the work of parents, community members, and employees. I promise to respect and support their work, to ensure the formulation and implementation of the remaining phases of the plan, and to monitor its outcomes. Finally, we need to do all of the above with a vigilant eye on our financial resources. Our District has an admirable history of stretching its dollars to get the most value for its buck. It can be difficult to plan a budget with so many aspects out of our control (i.e., gasoline and health insurance). However, I take very seriously the fact that we are working with the tax-payers' dollars and I look at each dollar spent as though it were my own.
