Please answer the following questions in no more than 300 words.
1. Why are you the best candidate for office?
Prior to being elected in 2001, I worked as a Neighborhood Planner with the City of Cleveland's Department of Community Development; an Administrative Assistant to Cleveland City Council; a Branch Manager for Bank One Glenville Branch; a teacher at Glenville High School; and a Communications Specialist for the Cleveland Clerk of Courts Office. In my current position as Councilwoman of Ward 8, I serve as the Chairwoman of the Community and Economic Development Committee; Vice-Chair of the Legislation Committee; and a member of the committee's on Finance, City Planning and Health and Human Services. Nationally, I serve as the Secretary of the National Black Caucus for Local Elected Officials. These are the reasons why I am qualified to serve. But, the reason why I want to continue a long history of public service to my community is because I want to make Ward 8 a clean, safe and economically viable community. I am a life-long resident of Ward 8 and have worked toward improving the quality of life of the residents I represent. New construction and rehabilitation projects such as Heritage Lane, Case Western Reserve University's West Quadrangle, the Veteran's Administration Consolidation, and CitiRama are part of the vision to improve our community. I have completed over $2 million in infrastructure improvements and provide funding for recreation, social services and educational programs.
2. If elected or re-elected, what are your top three (3) priorities and why?
If re-elected my three top priorities are: 1 The re-development of the East Side Market, 2 The development of the former White Motor Site at 79th and St, Clair Avenue, 3 The development of a state of the art community center at Gordon Park East Side Market: The re-development of the East Side Market is crucial for our community. The City of Cleveland has ignored the East Side Market and its potential to become a full service market not only for my constituents but residents throughout the city of Cleveland. The East Side Market should be a place where people plan to come and want to shop. It should be a meeting place for people who enjoy fresh produce, poultry and meat and as Councilwoman of this ward I am determined to make this happen. White Motor Site: The development of the former White Motor site as a retail center for our community will provide jobs, and convenience shopping for our residents. The development of this site will bring shoppers into our community and hopefully spur other economic development projects. Community Center: Our youth and residents deserve a community center that offers recreation, education, arts and culture and health and wellness screening.
