Please answer the following questions in no more than 300 words.
1. Why are you the best candidate for office?
It is my belief that the residents of Independence should have a strong, reliable and caring voice on council. For too many years the voice of the residents has been spoken, but have fallen upon deaf ears. The people had voted down senior housing; yet the current administration has ignored this plea and altered the plan to revitalize the downtown area to include senior housing. My solution to these issues of hearing-but not listening, and doing - but not what was requested, is to institute wards in Independence in a 4-3-1 redistricting plan. I am proposing 4 wards, north, south, east and west, for discussion purposes. The final product will be four ward council persons, three at large council persons and 1 Mayor. It is my belief that with this new construct of Council, we the people of Independence will know who is responsible for our area and who will hear, do and care about our voices. For this reason, and many others, I believe I am the person to be your voice on Council.
2. If elected or re-elected, what are your top three (3) priorities and why?
I would like to make Council more accountable to the residents of Independence. This can be achieved through the 4-3-1 approach I described above. Also in speaking to many of the residents I have found that a neighbor council can also be created to benefit the community. This council will allow those residents who have neighbor issues to get together with a mediator who will listen to and understand each person's difference and make unbiased recommendations to solve the issues before they manifest themselves into bigger problems. I plan to collect the residents e-mail addresses and create a distribution list that I will use to keep the voters informed as to my actions. This will engage the residents and their contributions will be more quickly handled and responded to. We currently use a newsletter to communicate with the residents and this is great however, this information is old by the time it gets in the hands of the residents.
