Teacher's Guide - Grades 6-8 Directions / Important Information Teaching Cleveland Bicentennial Legacy Futures Project: Grades 6-8 -- Neighborhood of the Future
1. Use the Teaching Cleveland Lesson Plans and Resource Materials to lead a class discussion about past, present and future aspects of a typical Cleveland neighborhood. Brainstorm various components of a neighborhood: residents, homes, parks, recreational areas, places of business, schools, modes of transportation, landscaping, etc. Discuss how those aspects are changing. You and your students can find additional information to use in this project by conducting various searches on the Internet. 2. After the discussion, students are to select aspects of their neighborhood that interest them. In Time Traveler Journals, students will write about and illustrate how those particular aspects of their neighborhood will look and function in 2046 (Journal master attached). You Decide! Teachers may allow students time to write in their Time Traveler Journals during class or make their daily journal entry a homework assignment. 3. Students will use their new-found knowledge about future neighborhoods to create a Future Neighborhood...2046! Bookmark. Students should write about and illustrate an idea from their Journal on the bookmark form (bookmark form master attached). Remind them to imagine an aspect of their neighborhood in 50 years. 4. A creative bulletin board or display area is certain to stimulate your students, leading to imaginative journal entries and inspired bookmarks. Consider displaying bookmarks and Time Traveler Journals. 5. Acknowledge your students' participation in the Teaching
Cleveland Bicentennial Legacy Future Project by presenting each student a
Certificate of Participation.
